Teacher Certification Options
The Department of Health and Kinesiology and the TAMU Dance Program offer two options for students interested in obtaining a K-12 certification.
Students enrolled in the B.S. in Kinesiology: Dance Science or B.S. in University Studies: Dance Concentration can apply for the Accelerate Online program offered through Texas A&M. This program is an innovative approach to preparing secondary teachers in the State of Texas. Students have the option of enrolling in this program in their last semester of their undergraduate degree. They would continue to take online courses throughout the summer and then participate in a yearlong paid internship in a secondary public school in Texas. The program offers assistance in finding a paid internship, flexible online instruction and support and mentoring during their paid teaching internship. The Department of Health and Kinesiology offers a 36-hour Masters in Sport Pedagogy. Through this degree, students can elect to take courses that will prepare them for the teacher certification exam with the State of Texas. Depending on the students undergraduate load, student may be able to dual enroll in the master’s program while finishing up their undergraduate degree in dance science. The benefit of this teacher certification option is students will not only be able to sit for the K-12 certification exam but will also graduate with the ability to teach at the university level.
